Airlines in the United States are facing what threatens to be the most serious pilot shortage since the 1960s, reports the Wall Street Journal. A Federal mandates kick in next summer that require newly hired pilots to have a minimum of 1,500 hours of prior flight experience (six times the current minimum) raising the cost and time to train new pilots at a time when pay cuts and more demanding schedules already have made the profession less attractive, WSJ reports. In addition, thousands of senior pilots at major airlines will soon hit the mandatory retirement age of 65, the paper says. Another federal rule that takes effect in 2014 requires more daily rest time for pilots. The change is expected to force passenger airlines to increase their number of pilots by at least 5 percent, the newspaper adds.


Industry officials have stated that number of available pilots has decreased, mostly due to the fact that many pilots opt to stay in the military instead of looking for employment at airlines. Airlines are forced to focus on pilots that have graduated from flight school and gained experience as flight instructors.


The possibility of a shortage of pilots affects many different nations. The Flight Training News has recently released figures that show over the next 18 years we will need 22,000 new pilots annually and the shortage will be around 446,000. International airlines would be able to grow if it weren’t for the pilot shortfall. Europe, China, the Middle East, and North America will all experience this pilot shortage. This has already started to undermine a long standing tradition at flight schools. After graduation, students extend their educational experience by hanging around for a time and becoming instructors. They may even get paid a bit. But as the 1500 hour mandate appears, those instructors hesitate to leave and so there is no room for the new graduates to become instructors and the job market is thrown off.


It’s good that this rule won’t kick in until August 2103 so this is a wonderful time to get prepared and get hired by an airline. No one is sure how the economy will factor in, but it’s still a very real possibility to get a wonderful job if you’ve paid your dues with education and work experience.
